Music Program
Name:
Jeffrey Lackey
Position and School: Drama, MHS
How long have you been teaching?
12 years
Where did you go to college? What
degrees do you hold?
I went to undergraduate school and Murray State University where
I received a Bachelors in Political Science and Speech and a
Minor in Theatre. I received my Masters in Theatre Arts in
Acting/Directing from the University of Kentucky.
Any awards of accomplishments?
After moving to NYC, I helped found the Working Stage Company
dedicated to new American plays, and I performed in Off-Broadway
and regional theatre while living in the city. My wife and I
also run "The Outsiders Studio Gallery" in Livingston Manor, NY.
What's your favorite part of the job?
I enjoy working with students and showing them how drama can be
used as a vehicle for critical thinking, building self esteem,
and as a voice for their own lives and what they are
experiencing.
Why did you become a Drama teacher?
I wanted to share my experience as an actor with young people
and help to make sure everyone understands the importance of the
Arts in education.
Did you do anything else before you
became a Drama teacher?
Along with acting and directing in NYC, I worked as an ESL
instructor at Berlitz School of Language and Kaplan
International Testing Center and was a GED teacher for the
Sullivan County Adult Education Program. I also teach Acting,
Speech, and English at Sullivan County Community College.
What are your hobbies?
I play guitar and mandolin, write songs and am working on a book
on acting for teens.
What advice would you offer to an
aspiring actor?
Making a living at acting is a very difficult field but, if that
is what truly inspires a young person, then it not only takes
talent but a lot of discipline as well. I always remind my
acting students that, even if they can't make a living in the
film and theatre world, the life skills taught while being on
the stage will help them for the rest of their lives.
