Monticello High School Environmental Care (Eco) Club News

The newly reorganized Eco Club is attempting to make positive social changes locally and across the globe. Projects we have initiated are an ongoing collection of “Cell Phones for Soldiers”; we are also collecting laser / ink cartridges for recycling and to help raise funds for our club projects. Recycling boxes are located at the entrance to the main office in the high school or you can call room 211 for a pickup.

The Club collected and mailed 36 cell phones to the “Cell Phones for Soldiers” program in November. We also collected and recycled 48 laser / ink cartridges in December, thanks to all who supported us in this effort.MHS students
The club would like to thank Ms. Colleen Emery a representative from Bethel Woods and Sullivan County Renaissance, who came and spoke to the students about the future of jobs in the “Green Technology” field on Dec.3, 2009. They also discussed the “United Nations Climate Change Conference” that was held in Denmark, in December and the impact this conference will have on the health of our planet and future job markets. Ms Emery also brought a “BMW Mini E” for the students to gain hands- on experience with an electric car.

The Eco Club would like to thank all who participated in the success of selling and buying “Equal Exchange Fair-Trade” products. “Equal Exchange” buys directly from small scale farmer’s co-operatives, owned and run by the farmers themselves. These co-operatives help keep rural communities healthy and strong, both locally and across the globe by committing to sustainable farming methods that help green the earth through reforestation, natural resource conservation and organic practices.

Think Recycle Information

We are excited to announce that Monticello Senior High School Eco Club has become a member of Think Recycle. Think Recycle is an environmental fundraiser offered to help bring the importance of recycling and the environment to the forefront, while allowing schools to earn much needed funds at the same time. The Think Recycle program is simple. Students and staff collect used inkjet / laser cartridges from the school and the community. As a result, the Eco Club will earn funds for each qualifying cartridge returned.

For every 24 qualifying items collected, Think Recycle will sponsor the planting of a tree through our partnerships with American Forests and Tree Canada. It’s a recycling fundraiser that is good for you and good for the environment. Your support of the Eco Club and Think recycle program will help teach the students and community the importance of recycling, the benefits of tree planting and help raise much needed funds. This program will run year round, which means that our students and staff can continually bring in these items throughout the school year. If you would like more information, please speak with our schools Think Recycle coordinators Maureen Bowers and Ronnie Kashan or any member of the Eco Club.
