MHS German II students sample German cuisine
Recently,
students in Ms. Nestroke’s German II class enthusiastically
sampled a wide variety of German foods that were highlighted in
their textebook, many of which were home cooked by their
teacher, who emigrated from Germany.
Almonds in all forms, as well as hazelnuts, are eaten frequently in Germany, in addition to raspberries in various forms and assorted chocolates.
Some of the foods the students sampled were; Rote Gruetze/Raspberry pudding, Sulze/ Head Cheese German style, Leberkaes/ Bavarian Meat loaf, Ganzefett mit Zwiebeln/ Goose gravy spread with caramelized onions and Rotkraut mit apfel/ Red cabbages with apples.
The most popular foods were the sweets. Least popular was the red cabbage with apples and head cheese.
Once a month, Ms. Nestroke traveled to Saugerties to shop at the Smoke House of the Catskills to purchase German foods for the students to sample.
The class of 2014 was very willing to sample foods and other delicacies of the German culture and generally seemed to enjoy that aspect of the class.
