Project Excel Universal Pre-K (UPK) program

Project Excel Preschool maintains an ongoing waiting list for its 2011-2012 UPK program. Parents who want to enroll their children in UPK should call the preschool at 794-4020 and request a spot on the waiting list. Children who are on the list are enrolled throughout the year due to families moving out of the district. Registration for the 2012-2013 school year began January 3.

The Community Builds a Playground for Preschoolers

Students who attend the Project Excel Preschool in Monticello now have an added activity and adventure to fill their school day – a brand new outdoor Project Excelplayground. The $16,000 colorful equipment includes multiple slides, tunnels, ladders and climbing areas. It took nine years and the generosity of numerous local families and businesses to raise the money needed to purchase and construct the play unit. “We never could have funded this project without the immense support from our community,” said Cathy Stawarz, the director of Project Excel. “The children love it!” If all goes as planned, the preschool hopes to raise enough money to add a couple of swing sets by next year. The staff consists of well-trained, experienced educators driven by the educational philosophy of the Monticello Central School District and the early childhood policies of Easter Seals. They strive to provide an educationally stimulating classroom environment enriched with positive behavior management strategies.

In a Project Excel classroom, children receive developmentally appropriate pre-academic instruction. Daily opportunities to participate in learning experiences and activities such as art, music, and movement, help encourage children’s self expression. Guided socialization activities and exposure to high quality literature are also a part of the diverse curriculum. Additionally, there are opportunities for gross motor development, participation in simple cooking activities, exposure to science activities, and computer instruction.
