Monticello High School: Spaghetti supper helps bring families together and to school
November 2010
As a way to welcome more families to the fall parent teacher
conference night, Monticello High School staff and students
hosted their first annual spaghetti
supper. This free feast
allowed dozens of attendees to enjoy a scrumptious meal served
by district personnel and members of the Monticello Fire
Department,
Monticello Police Department and the Sullivan County Sheriff’s
Department.
“This event was designed to help encourage parents to bring
their families to school, to meet teachers, tour the building
and gather more information about the many different
opportunities and programs available,” said Monticello High
School Principal Arleene Siegel. “It also allowed us to
strengthen our community ties. All-in-all it was a great
success.”
To add ambiance to the evening’s event, high school students
provided musical entertainment for the diners, while the Home
and Careers class supplied festively decorated cupcakes for
those who could squeeze in dessert. In addition, many high
school clubs and groups, and some community agencies set up
booths to provide parents with information.
Monticello mom Jannette Torres thought the event was a great way
to get parents more involved in the educational process.

“This event gets parents into the school and gets them
interested in what is going on in the classroom,” said Ms.
Torres. “Increase parental involvement and you increase student
success big time. I hope the high school hosts more activities
like this one that welcomes families.”

According to Ms. Siegel, she plans to do just that.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patrick Michel helped serve up the
hot spaghetti with Monticello Fire Department members, from

Brian Gregory. The quartet calculated that between them they
served at least four dozen meals.
Although, Monticello Schools parent and employee Sonia Gugliotta
enjoyed the pasta meal, she was looking forward to meeting her
daughter’s teachers and picking up her report card.
Eleventh-grader Kimberly said that she “wasn’t worried a bit”
and that her mom wouldn’t find any surprises on her report card!
Special thanks to the community businesses and organizations
that helped fund and publicize the event: Watermark
Communications (WSUL and WVOS), Harris, Monti & McLaughlin
Insurance and the Erie Insurance Agency, and to the Monticello
Teachers Association (MTA).
