How do I get a teaching assistant certificate?
All teaching assistants must have a high school diploma or recognized
equivalent.
If you have a valid New York State Teaching Certification, you do not need a
teaching assistant license.
All candidates who apply on or after February 2, 2004 for a credential to work
as a teaching assistant in New York State must apply with a TEACH online
account, and proof of completion of the two workshops, Child Abuse and Violence,
must also accompany the application.
Once you pass the New York State Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (ATAS),
you meet the requirements to apply for a certificate. For information on how to
register to take the test, test sites, etc. see
www.nysatas.nesinc.com.
The test fee is $35. You can register to take the test on the Internet or by
telephone at (413) 256-2882 for an additional $20, or by mail for an additional
$5.
