Monticello High School’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive provides 100 holiday meals
For
more than 40 years, the Monticello High School community has
collected monetary donations during the month of November in
order to provide a complete Thanksgiving meal to families in
need within our school district community.
Starting in November, classes compete against each other for prizes based on which classes collect the most money. The overall winner for the freshmen and for grades 10-12 also receives a breakfast cooked by High School Principal Lori Orestano-James.
This year, the Food Drive raised approximately $3,700 -- enough to provide a food basket containing 13 items for a traditional Thanksgiving meal (potatoes, corn, peas, green beans, cranberry sauce, stuffing, yams, gravy, juice, rolls, corn muffin mix, pumpkin pie, and of course, a turkey) for 100 families in our school district. Assisting in the effort, as they have done for the past several years, was the Emma Chase School who contributed more $80 to this year’s drive.
Holiday
Toy Drive collections begin December 1
The Food Drive is one of two major activities that the high school students coordinate to help service the needy in our community. The other major activity is the Holiday Toy Drive. During the next three weeks, students will collect money during first period classes. Then, students shop for toys from wish lists provided by students at Sullivan County Head Start. The students wrap the gifts and then, dressed in matching elf shirts, will accompany Santa to deliver the toys. It is a very special kick-off to the holidays as the high school students and pre-school students play together with the new toys.
Collections for the Toy Drive begin December 1. Anyone who would like to make a donation can contact Beth Lauri at the High School at mlauri@k12mcsd.net or 794-8840 ext 10213. Checks can be made out to the MHS Food/Toy Drive.
This year’s Food and Toy Drive Chairpersons are Meaghan MacCormack, Lauren Roy, Steffany Vieira and Rachelle Walker. The advisor for the Food and Toy Drives is High School Social Studies Teacher Beth Lauri, who has coordinated these activities for 25 years.
