District attorney speaks to Chase students about bullying

October 31, 2011

DA James Farrell talks to studentsSullivan County District Attorney James R. Farrell recently visited the students at Chase Elementary School to help educate them about the dangers and effects of bullying.

While visiting schools and speaking with students, District Attorney Farrell’s goal is to prevent students from becoming a bully and give a voice to students who may have been bullied.

In a recent letter to the superintendent and principals, District Attorney Farrell explained his view on this very important issue. “My office and I are committed to making our schools safe and a place where education can flourish and combating this problem now, and not waiting until tragedy strikes, is the best way to do just that.”

The District Attorney's visit goes hand-in-hand with an o-going program put in place by School Social Worker April Velasco. Velasco visits each class to make students active participants in the anti-bully campaign. Students take an oath not to bully and to help people who are being bullied. The whole community at Chase strives to make the school a place where students are open-minded and are encouraged to become thinkers and inquirers.
