New menu items on the horizon for school lunches
"Paella Goes North" with Alaskan Pollack
set to debut in the district dining halls
Monticello Schools Lunch Manager Debra Donleavy recently joined other food service directors from around the region to sample new products and gather ideas for new menu concepts at the NY School Nutrition Association tradeshow.
Many of the products showcased are being touted as healthier options when compared to some of the more traditional cafeteria foods. These include whole grain and vegetarian products, sweet potato fries, and lean proteins. In addition, many of the selections do not contain trans fats or added sugar, have lower sodium levels and no high fructose corn syrup.
When the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 takes effect in September 2012, schools will be required to serve lunches that meet strict federal guidelines. FULL STORY

MyNutriKids - Online Meal Account System Available
The Monticello Central School District Food Service Department announces its new online meal account prepayment system called MyNutriKids. This convenient, easy and secure online prepayment service allows parents to deposit money into a school meal account at any time. This service also provides the ability to view the account balance through the web site www.mynutrikids.com. Lunch lines move along much faster with this system which is designed to make it easier to deposit and track meal money. Parents also have the ability to print a record of recent purchases via a history report - which lists all the dates and times of breakfast and lunch purchases within the past 30 days.
To access these services, click the MyNutriKids link below.
From the MyNutriKids site, you can create an account and add money for school

NUTRITION NOTES
According to nutrition experts, a quick and easy way to make good food choices is to follow these four rules when checking labels:
1. One gram or less of saturated fat and cholesterol per serving.
2. No added sugar (beware of sugar
"code names" such as high fructose corn syrup, dextrose and
fruit juice
concentrate).
3. Less than 140 milligrams of sodium per serving (higher sodium levels up to 400 milligrams is okay in foods that are low in saturated fat, contain fiber or are significant sources of vitamins and minerals).
4. 100 percent whole grain in bread products.

School lunch prices to increase by 25 cents
August 8, 2011
The price of a school lunch for all Monticello Central School District students will increase by 25 cents as of September 2011. This increase will make the high school and middle school student lunch price $2.25. The lunch price for all elementary school students will be $2. This increase does not affect the price of breakfast which will remain at $1 for all students.
The district is required to increase lunch prices as a way to comply with a section of the new Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which is a federal initiative.
The Monticello Schools Board of Education recently approved the price increase.
