Chase Students Participate in Odyssey of the Mind Competition

Discovered Treasures Chase students

This team’s problem was to create and present an original performance that included the portrayal of the discovery of two archaeological treasures. One portrayal was a team-created version of the discovery of an actual historical treasure. While the other portrayal was the team's depiction of a modern sculpture that exists today but was discovered in the future. The performance included an artistic representation of the two discovered treasures and characters that were part of the discovery teams. Students were thinkers and open-minded as they worked together to problem solve and create a heartwarming performance. The members for this team were Dylan Broder, grade 4; Andrew Fredell, grade 5; Cheyenne Guadalupe, grade 3; Ellie Harrold, grade 4; Stephen Radlein, grade 4; and Lauren Salerno, grade 3. The team was coached by Connie O’Rourke. This team was praised for their creativity, teamwork and amazing props.

Food CourtChase students

The Food Court team had to solve the problem of creating and presenting a humorous performance where a food item was accused of being unhealthy and had to defend itself among its food peers. Characters were food items, which included "the accused," "the accuser," a jury that is not portrayed by team members, and additional team-created characters. The jury’s reveal of its decision to the audience was met with a heartwarming applause. This team communicated creatively in a variety of ways including a rap and non-verbal clues. The members of this team were DeAndre Bowens, grade 4; Jonah Lily, grade 4; Kelly Lynn, grade 4; Megan Joyce, grade 5; Kelly Swenson, grade 4; John Unverzagt, grade 3; and Mia Unverzagt, grade 3. The team was coached by Jennifer Unverzagt. The team received praise from the judges for their scenery which was a giant lunchbox, as well as the food props inside the lunchbox. They thought the team created and performed a “clever” rap. Most importantly the judges saw the team having fun and working well together!

Nature Trail'RChase students

This team’s problem was to design, build and drive a human-powered vehicle and camper around a camping trail. On the Nature Trail, the vehicle overcome the obstacle of a boulder blocking the trail, cleaned up the environment by planting a tree, encountered a ferocious liger, and overcame a steering wheel falling off. The performance included a character that reported from the campground explaining the experience of her teammates on the Nature Trail. Throughout the past six months of practice, the team tapped into their creativity and used their imagination while learning about creative problem solving. This team took second place on the day of the competition. The members for this problem were Alexis Costa, grade 5; Dietrich Behrens-Acosta, grade 3; Gabby Burton, grade 4; Autumn Herald, grade 4; Amanda Karmolinski, grade 4; and Patrick Lynn, grade 3. The team was coached by Katlyn LaGrutta. This team was praised by the judges for their team work and funny skit as well as their acting and costumes.
